Black and White Surreal Abstract Bird Skull

Bird skull beneath white lines, surreal abstract art in black and white by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Dormiveglia Black.

It’s a black and white version of Dormiveglia. At first I thought I’d only do this image in color, but it works very well in black and white. Actually it’s a really obvious candidate, so I don’t know why it took so long to occur to me.

It’s rare to merely desaturate a color image and have it work, though. Normally adjustments to brightness, contrast, and overall tone have to be made. However, this one is a straight desaturation. Regardless, I still experimented to see if any adjustments would improve it, but eventually concluded that the simplest route was the best in this case.

Surreal Abstract Crab Leg Collage

Crab leg collage in blue-green with red triangle and white lines. Surreal abstract art by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Ampersand. Mostly because of the shape of the underlying crab leg on the right with the triangle against it. Kind of reminiscent of an ampersand, and I like the unexpected connotation of the name.

I’ve used the base iPhone crab shell photo three times, here, in Anfractuosity, and in another named Uhtceare.

I get a perverse satisfaction at using a cell phone to produce art. A super-high resolution camera capable of technically perfect images isn’t always necessary, but admittedly that might be in large part due to the nature of my work. Probably not quite as true for a landscape photographer for instance.

Surreal Abstract Crab Leg Collage With Square

Pink crab leg collage with purple square on blue background. Surreal abstract art by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Uhtceare, a word I found when researching another title. Pronounced “oot-key-ah-rah”, it’s an Old English word apparently meaning lying awake worrying before dawn (if the source I read is correct).

It imbues the image with heavy meaning for an overall poetic effect I really like.

I’ve used the base iPhone crab shell photo three times so far, here, in Anfractuosity, and in another named Ampersand.

Surreal Abstract Jawbone With Lines – Black and White

Deconstructed jawbone with lines, surreal abstract art in black and white by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Innaiant Black.

Though it looks like wood, it’s actually part of a jawbone. I’d intended to include some of the teeth because they made nice shapes, but in the end they looked more horrific than anything. It’s pretty crazy how little of the original image there is left, actually.

It’s one of two versions, the other is called Innaiant, and is brown on dark green.

Surreal Abstract Crab Shell Collage

Pink crab shell collage with black geometric shapes, on blue background. Surreal abstract art by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Anfractuosity, a word meaning the state of having many twists and turns.

The underlying shapes are various aspects of crab legs and pincers, from a photo I took with an iPhone. This artwork continues my theme of clashing creepy subjects with soft colors and tones, a juxtaposition I find pleasingly paradoxical.

I’ve done other pieces based on the same photo, one named Uhtceare, and the other Ampersand.

Surreal Abstract Jawbone With Lines

Deconstructed jawbone with lines, surreal abstract art in brown and green by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Innaiant. It’s a play on naiant, which is a lovely word meaning positioned horizontally, or swimming horizontally when referring to aquatic life. The image is the opposite of that, so I added the negative in- prefix to coin the inverse (as far as I can tell it didn’t already exist). I thought innaiant had a nicer ring than unnaiant, annaiant, or some other negative prefix.

It’s one of two versions, the other being in black and white, called Innaiant Black.

Surreal Abstract Shell With Cross

Deconstructed seashell with cross, surreal abstract art in red and blue by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Antelucan Red.

It’s one of three variations, the others being Antelucan White, which is off-white on a darker blue background, and Antelucan Black, which is in black and white.

The deconstructed shape is a seashell. I have good memories of making this image. I completed it in the mornings before going out sightseeing during a holiday to Croatia.

Blue & White Surreal Abstract Shell With Cross

Deconstructed seashell with cross, surreal abstract art in blue and white by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Antelucan White.

It’s one of three variations, the others being Antelucan Red, which is red on a light blue background, and Antelucan Black, which is black and white.

The deconstructed shape is just one seashell that I chopped up and manipulated into the composition you see.

As prosaic as a broken old seashell might seem, when I found it sitting around the house I was thrilled. I instantly saw the potential in it, and I’d been having trouble finding material to photograph for my art.

Black & White Surreal Abstract Shell With Cross

Deconstructed seashell with cross, surreal abstract art in black and white by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Antelucan Black.

It’s one of three variations, the others being Antelucan Red, which is red on a light blue background, and Antelucan White, which is off-white on a darker blue.

I keep a list of title ideas, words or phrases that I either happen upon, arbitrarily think of, or specifically search for, and antelucan was one such. It means before dawn.

Surreal Abstract Bird Skull With Lines

Bird skull beneath white lines, surreal abstract art in brown and blue-green by Joseph Westrupp.

The title of this picture is Dormiveglia, a word meaning the semi-conscious state between wakefulness and sleep.

This is actually the same bird skull as in Love From Ornithurae, which I had no intention of using for multiple pieces. But in playing around with composition using the already-edited bird skull, I saw the germ of this image and had to develop it.

Update: I made a black and white version of this image, too. It’s called Dormiveglia Black.
